Ride Reports

South Brent
Choosing a short, leisurely ride, we headed to South Brent to buy food and lingered over lunch on South Brent Island in warm sunshine, its butterflies and dragonflies stealing the show; a few photos on the bridge rounded off a gentle, satisfying outing.

Landscove
An evening spin towards Landscove turned into a playful detour when George found a miniature tennis ball, prompting impromptu ball and Frisbee games on the school field. As darkness fell we dropped plans for a longer loop and headed straight back.

Goodrington Sands
A relentless push to Goodrington Sands made this the most adventurous ride since Easter and showed the youngsters are ready for longer Sundays. Paignton was heaving — every sea-wall space filled with VW camper vans — and lunch was a £2.75 barely adequate burger.

Lake District 5
Sun, steep passes and the odd train wrangle shaped this Lake District tour. At Birmingham we hustled bikes aboard after an official demanded the ‘right’ ticket; we winched over Wrynose and Hardknott in mist then rested with hot chocolate by the Eskdale railway. The contrast between Wasdale’s ‘Yes we can’ and Buttermere’s ‘No we can’t’ became a running joke.
Hembury Woods
Only two turned out, so it was a quiet, flowing spin through Hembury Woods, with the slalom track the clear highlight.

Ashprington
A sunny ride to Ashprington became a small mission of kindness when we found a purse full of cards and cash and returned it to the owner’s daughter, to great relief. Between Totnes food market snacks and a quiet lunch by the Dart, Google’s ‘easy’ route briefly put us on the A38 - a lesson to stick to the lanes.
Cinema Night: Fantastic Four
Our new Cinema Night took us to Plymouth for Fantastic Four: mixed reviews but a good evening out. The talking point came afterwards, when Michael and Dillan realised they’d left their phones behind – a swift return found both waiting safely with the cinema staff.
Games & supermarket trip
Relentless rain, worsening by 7pm, meant the evening ride was cancelled; instead we had a simple social, punctuated by a visit to the local supermarket.
Badminton
Once again, heavy rain forced us to abandon the planned evening ride, so we held a low-key badminton social at Ashmoor instead.
Cinema Night
We gathered in the Crofters clubroom for a quiet Cinema Night, continuing our run through Agents of Shield season 2. The usual drinks and snacks and shared anticipation for the next episode gave the evening its simple appeal.
Combe
An evening spin to Combe became memorable for the eerie drone drifting from the climb to Cross Furzes: a didgeridoo performance at a new event called “The Gathering”. After a burst of applause from the crowd, we quickened our pace and slipped away down Wallaford hill to Buckfastleigh.
Badminton
A wet morning saw us abandon the planned ride and switch to badminton at Ashmoor Leisure Centre in Ashburton, a simple indoor detour that saved the day.
