Frequently Asked Questions
1. Who can access this site?
This archive is freely accessible to anyone with an interest in the history and activities of the South Dartmoor CTC cycling group.
2. Why does the archive cover the years 1985–2019?
The archive documents the complete history of South Dartmoor CTC from its founding in May 1985 until its closure in September 2019. No new group events have taken place since then, but the site remains a living record of all rides, tours, and special moments during those years.
3. Is the archive complete and final?
No—the archive is a living, ongoing restoration project. Work is constantly being done to enhance and update photos, videos, and reports. Thanks to modern AI technology, original photographs are being restored and upscaled to the highest possible resolution and clarity, so that even decades-old images look as though they were taken on the latest cameras. Video material is being remastered, with standard definition footage upscaled to 4K, interlaced videos de-interlaced, colours and clarity improved, and captions, mileages, and timings made more accurate than ever before.
Every time you visit, you may find newly restored or updated material. This project will continue to improve as new AI tools become available, so the site is far from static.
4. How do I find a particular ride, event, or person?
You can browse events by year or type, or search for names and keywords. In future, we plan to add a feature that allows you to see the most recently updated or newly enhanced material at a glance.
5. How have the photographs and videos been restored?
A painstaking, multi-year project is underway to restore all original photographs and videos to the highest quality. Modern AI tools are used to upscale images, remove imperfections, improve clarity, and even correct lighting and colour issues. For videos, special care is taken to remaster interlaced or low-resolution footage, ensuring the best possible viewing experience for material going back to the 1980s and 1990s. Reports are also being enhanced, with corrections and improvements made using advanced AI editing tools.
6. Who has contributed to the archive?
While the archive is curated and maintained by Michael, who ran the club for its entire existence, it includes contributions from many members and friends of South Dartmoor CTC over the years. Photos, videos, and reports have come from a wide range of people, helping to make the archive as complete as possible. Contributions of new material are always welcome.
7. Can I contribute my own photos, videos, or stories?
Yes! If you have any material related to South Dartmoor CTC events, please use the contact page to get in touch. The contact form may allow you to attach a photo, or you can send material via email. If you have a larger collection to share, just let us know and we’ll discuss the best way to add your memories to the site.
8. Are there both photos and videos?
Definitely. The archive includes a vast range of photographs, and from the mid-1980s onwards, an ever-growing collection of videos. Video coverage increased especially from the early 1990s. These offer a unique and vivid way to experience past rides and tours.
9. Can I download or share content from the site?
All content is provided for personal enjoyment and sharing with friends or family who appeared in them. While there are no direct download buttons, you are welcome to save photos or videos for your own use. Please credit the archive if you share them more widely.
10. How can I reconnect with old friends or fellow riders?
If you’d like to get in touch with someone you see featured on the site, you can contact the site maintainer via the contact page, and a message can be passed on where appropriate.
We are also planning to introduce a moderated forum or comment section to allow ex-members to share memories and reconnect with each other.
11. How can I report an error or provide more information?
If you spot an error or wish to add further details to a report, photo, or video, please get in touch via the contact page. We welcome corrections and additions!
12. Is this site run by the official CTC?
No, this is an independent archive created and maintained by Michael, the only secretary of South Dartmoor CTC throughout its entire history, preserving the group’s record for posterity. It is not affiliated with the current national CTC or Cycling UK.
13. Are there links to related archives, like Torbay CTC?
Yes! If you are interested in rides and events before May 1985, the Torbay CTC Archive provides a similar record for the years 1978–1985, when many South Dartmoor members rode with Torbay.
