Day ride: Dartmeet
Cloudy start, sunny later
7 Participants: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Jerry Johnson, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath, Callum O'Brien, Jack Parnell
We had a good turnout, but somehow Jack got the false impression at the start that nobody wanted to help him adjust his disc brakes so he went home. He wasn’t waiting for us in the car park and we didn’t see him anywhere on the way past his house, so we had no choice but to continue with the ride.

We rode up to Scoriton where our friendly dog Ben was out again, then took the lane to Michelcombe and up to Holne. Kevin Presland and the Torbay group came up behind us at the seat junction above Holne just at the point in the ride when Michael was feeling really drained from his recent virus and was wondering whether he would be able to do the full ride to Dartmeet. Callum O’B was also feeling tired so we all rode up to Venford at various speeds, chatting along the way By the time we reached the top Kevin’s group had gone on and the rest of us were feeling somewhat better, so we decided to press on to Badgers’ Holt despite Ash’s kind advice that Michael shouldn’t push himself onwards if he was feeling unwell.

We took the track from Combestone Tor to the stepping stones: it was quite muddy in places, and there was a lot of mud in the narrow gateway near the bottom of the final field – so muddy in fact that Ash got stuck in it!

The river was fairly high today so two of the stepping stones only had small dry areas and the water was quite deep around all of them. As we did our best to carry the bikes across the river Jerry thought the whole situation was crazily fun and adventurous, so he insisted on some photos for the website.

We reached the Badgers’ Holt café at 1.12. Most people wanted to stop there, so we went inside for a very enjoyable break. Ash had chocolate cake and a hot chocolate, Michael had coffee cake and a hot chocolate, but both of them felt the drinks were tasty but too small – yes they were in mugs, but they were the smallest mugs they had ever seen! Zac had a burger with loads of mustard. He also had a black and white cat on his lap that drooled onto him, although he didn’t notice the drooling!

As we were leaving the café at 1.45 some were filling their water bottles, so Michael sent Callum O’B on ahead up Dartmeet Hill on Callum F’s bike, accompanied by Ash, with clear instructions for Ash to keep him moving until he got to the top. He was making excellent progress, but as soon as the rest of us got near Callum F shouted to Callum O’B to stop, then swapped bikes back again! Callum O’B then pushed his bike – slowly – to the top, and we ended up waiting fifteen minutes for him. Thanks Callum F!

Next we rode the famous Dr Blackall’s drive in what was now a quite sunny and pleasant afternoon. Zac almost skipped the final downhill part of the track saying he had had enough of off-road for one day, but in the end we all did it and enjoyed it as always.

Callum O’B was slow again up to Gallant le Bower, so Michael sent the three on that wanted to ride Hembury Woods track and we met them at the car park near the bottom of the woods. We passed Jerry’s grandparents at Coronation Seat and got home by 3.25 for an hour of computer games.

10:15 - 13:40
Morning ride: Holne
Sunny, 11°
6 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath, Callum O'Brien
Lawrence was out on his brand new Trek 3700 disc bike today, and he was clearly very pleased with it. Michael had decided to lead the ride by car today as he was still not feeling up to cycling after his recent virus. Michael suggested Diptford as a good destination today but Ash managed to persuade everyone to vote for the shorter ride to Chalk Ford and that is what we ended up doing.

Lawrence rode well up Wallaford Road on his new bike. At Cross Furzes Ash, Callum F and Callum O’B wanted to ride the track to Chalk Ford, so the rest of us rode down to Scoriton where we had to wait 25 minutes for them to emerge from the track. They were all muddy and wet but had clearly enjoyed the ride.

We went on to Michelcombe and met ex-member Ricky Dixon digging a hole by the side of the road to lay a pipe. We had a nice chat with him – he is now working for the Department for International Development.

At Holne everyone liked the idea of a café stop, and Lawrence and Callum O’B ordered their usual meal of scrambled egg on toast. The elderly American chap who was serving half remembered some of our names from the last time we saw him.

We left there at around 12.55 and all but Zac rode the slalom track through Hembury Woods. We met Jack near the top, out for a ride on his own, then got home for around 1.40. Ash uncovered the trampoline with a little help from the two Callums, and once they had put the safety net back on they were able to enjoy some quality time on the trampoline in the afternoon sun. Zac, Lawrence and Michael played some games of Call of Duty 4 which Zac won clearly by killing Lawrence a lot! Everyone left at 3.30.

10:15 - 12:55
Morning ride: Belford Mill
Cloudy, 10°, rain by afternoon
7 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Jerry Johnson, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath, Callum O'Brien, Jack Parnell
All our regular riders were out today except Callum F who was in Gloucester. Lawrence got Michael to make him a toast and marmalade breakfast, then everyone took a look at Callum O’Brien’s new bike, which turned out to be exactly the same model and colour as Lawrence’s Trek.

Michael was around 80% fit now after his recent cough, so he was back to cycling today. Zac suggested Ashburton and everyone seemed happy with that so we followed our usual route along the old Ashburton road and then took the old railway track to the park where some played for a short time and others stayed outside in the hope that the rest would then finish quicker.

The woodland track back from Belford Mill was a bit muddy today. Halfway along the track we found a rope overhanging the river which provided much entertainment. Callum plucked up courage to have a go after watching the others and had no problems, but Lawrence needed some help to return to the bank when he took his turn.

Leaving the woods we noticed a pair of dirty shorts hanging from a bramble by the gate and wondered how they got there. We then returned past South Dartmoor School and along the old railway line, reaching Buckfastleigh by 12.55. Lawrence did will today, and Callum’s new bike made a huge difference to his performance.

10:15 - 13:15
Morning ride: Dartington
Wintry showers and sunny spells, 5°
5 Participants: Ash Freeman, Jerry Johnson, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath, Callum O'Brien
We left around 10.45 and rode along Colston Road as planned. At Dartington we called in to the Cranks vegetarian restaurant: Zac got coffee cake and tea, Ash and Michael had hot chocolates and Jerry and Callum didn’t buy anything at all. After an enjoyable time there Callum bought chips from the new Venus café and ate them on the way home.

Nobody felt like extending the ride, which was understandable considering the weather, so we took the cycle path back up to Huxham’s Cross, dropped down to Staverton Bridge and then returned home via Abham for around 1.15.
Sunday 8 January 2012
10:15 - 12:40
Morning ride: Skerraton Down
Cloudy but dry, 10°
6 Participants: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Jerry Johnson, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, Jack Parnell
We rode up Dean hill, then took the Moorshead Cross lane over to Skerraton Down as most of the group preferred that to the Avon Dam today. This involved taking the bridleway up to the moor and then following a path across the open moor to Skerraton Down. Jerry didn’t much like the off-road but still enjoyed the ride.

After having fun on the descent to Cross Furzes Callum O’Brien tried riding the ford and got his feet wet, which didn’t leave him feeling too happy. Jerry needed a little encouragement to keep to the left down Wallaford Road, but we all managed to negotiate the hill safely and got back to Crofters for 12.40.

There was a social after the ride until 2.30 in which we all played a massive team game of Lord of the Rings.

10:15 - 13:00
Morning ride: River Dart Country Park
Sunny but cold, 6°
8 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Jerry Johnson, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath, Callum O'Brien, Jack Parnell
Our plan on this very sunny but chilly morning was to head for Venford Reservoir, but after leaving late at 10.32 Jerry and Jack were slowing us down by stopping for serveral chats, and then Lawrence was a bit slow as well. We split for the climb to Holne, with the shortcut steep hill brigade narrowly winning the race despite Ash pushing hard on the Michelcombe route. By the time we reached Holne Park it was 11.30 and everyone voted to visit the café and head for River Dart instead of Venford. We still found time to play in the park first though.

Starting down the River Dart track we noticed that several trees had been felled near the upper end: clearly it is harvesting time for parts of the woodland. We stopped to play on the snake slide in the park before heading home along the old Ashburton road for 1pm. There was a social after the ride until 2.30 which included Lord of the Rings and trampolining.

10:15 - 13:20
Morning ride: Broadhempston
Breezy and chilly, 10°
6 Participants: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Jerry Johnson, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath, Callum O'Brien
We passed a “Road Closed” sign at the start of Old Totnes Road, but it wasn’t actually closed at all. We continued up Green Lane, down the track to Riverford (past the traveller camp) and then on into Staverton. We spent five minutes playing in the park where Ash declined to do the back flip off the swing that some of his “friends” had suggested.

Continuing to Broadhempston via the lower lane and the school we had some Frisbee fun in the park there for ten minutes. They really wanted to ride Beaston tonight, so after detouring around Ron Greet we took the track, accompanied by some other cyclists that were going the same way. The track was quite muddy in places but there were no real lakes today.

To finish the ride we returned via Landscove and Green Lane, getting home for 1.20. There was a trampoline social after the ride until 3.30.
Sunday 29 January 2012
10:15 - 12:35
Morning ride: Burchetts Wood
Very cold, 4°, rain/sleet later
7 Participants: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Jerry Johnson, Michael Jones, Zac McGrath, Callum O'Brien, Jack Parnell
It was very cold (4 degrees) this morning with a forecast of rain and sleet coming in after 12.30. Everyone was out today except Lawrence who used the excuse that it was “too cold”.

Michael had thought about Ashburton as a destination today, but it was so cold on the way down Crest Hill that he changed it to Burchett’s Wood: this was still a bit muddy at the start but the second half is now much dryer and more enjoyable than it used to be.

We rode up the steep hill past Mill Leat Farm, pausing part-way up for a rest and some photographs. They saw an intriguing cow way up in a high field and asked Michael to photograph it, but it was so far away that it came out as little more than a dark blur.

We took the lane down past Shuttaford and up the other side to Humphrey’s Cross where there was the inevitable rush to climb the tree. We planned to ride the Slalom through Hembury Woods but when we got to the entrance gate it looked a bit muddy and only Ash and Callum O’B wanted to ride it. They followed the usual route via the Fort path while the rest of us took the road and waited at the lower car park. We chatted with the Scottish owner of a car that had very large alloy wheels and was interested to hear the cost of replacement tyres was easily twice that of anyone else’s tyres.

We got home by 12.35 as planned, but in the end the rain didn’t arrive properly until after 4pm. There was a social after the ride that included Risk on the PCs at Zac’s suggestion, although there was a slight delay as it needed to be installed on all five PCs before we could play. There was half an hour for trampoline fun before everyone left at 3.30.
Sunday 5 February 2012
10:15 - 14:00
Morning ride: Totnes
Dry with sunny spells, 5-7°
6 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Jerry Johnson, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien
Much of the UK had received a blanket of snow overnight, but of course we didn’t get any here in South Devon. We had dry, sunny conditions although it was quite cold. Lawrence asked for toast as soon as he arrived, but Michael was already preparing it for him in anticipation of his request. He still got the last word however by asking for a second piece.

There was general agreement that we should ride towards Dartington, so we set off around 10.35 along Colston road. Lawrence was on good form today and CoB was on top form, so we made such good speed that Michael decided we could go on to Totnes.

The cycle path from Totnes was fun so we rode it all the way to Totnes Bridge, pausing at the weir for some interesting action photos involving the hapless Lawrence. Morrisons provided an enjoyable café stop, although some of our group ate way more than Michael advised: Lawrence again bought a fry-up and Callum O’B bought chicken nuggets. Callum F and Jerry limited themselves to buying 10 doughnuts for £1, probably for reasons of finance.

Michael suggested the more ambitious return over Rattery by way of a change, and since he didn’t hear any objections we followed the route from Dartington past the old South Devon Farmers site and rode straight up the hill towards Rattery Sawmills. Lawrence was now beginning to regret eating the large meal and promised not to have it again, but he still managed OK up the hill, delaying us only by 10 minutes or so. CoB stayed near the front all the way. We got home by 2.00, just ten minutes later than Michael had predicted at Totnes.

There was time for Modern Warfare 2 and trampoline fun after the ride.
Sunday 12 February 2012
10:15 - 13:00
Morning ride: Avonwick
Cold start 3°, sunny later 8°
4 Participants: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Jerry Johnson, Michael Jones
It seems as though CoB’s reason for not coming today was that Michael mentioned a hill in one of the potential destinations today.

In view of the very cold start everyone wanted the ride to be morning only, so we rode up Dean Hill and down to South Brent. Nobody except Ash liked the idea of going on to Ugborough Beacon or the Avon Dam, so we had fun in the Play Park and then rode down to Avonwick, stopping briefly for photos at the little bridge over the river.

Jerry and Callum declined the Cobbly Walk track shortcut and took the road alternative. We then proceeded towards Diptford along the riverside road, then Callum insisted we took the Diptford Downs shortcut back towards Rattery, so we missed out on Diptford itself.

It was sunny now and much warmer for our return via Shorter Cross and the viaduct road to Rattery. Michael would have loved to ride further, but evidently this was quite far enough for Callum.

There was a social after the ride until 3.30 involving games of Modern Warfare 2 with Ash and Michael against Jerry and Callum which ended in a draw.
