Tour: Cotswolds
Day 4 Oxford to Home
Mainly sunny and warm
18 miles (▲ 70m ▼ 65m)
7 Participants: Ash Freeman, Callum Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, Jack Parnell, John Rogers, Will Rogers
We were up at 7.45 as usual on our final morning of the tour. It had been so hot last night with the window closed that Michael actually felt slightly sick as he got up – he was relieved to open the windows again at the earliest opportunity. It had still been noisy even with the window closed, both from the road outside and the nearby railway line, so the general feeling was that we should avoid staying here again in future. Michael had to wake Callum by knocking on his door, but by 8.10 he was up and we all went down for breakfast. The breakfast was fine, although Ash and Jack had to fetch chairs from the library before they could sit down.

While we were packing, Callum O’B found his wallet in his pannier! He maintained £20 was missing, as he only had £10 left in it, but we suspected he had actually overspent on the first day of the tour. After Callum O’B and Michael paid for their restaurant meals from last night we got away at about 9.30.

We rode past the New Theatre and on to Broad Street, which actually had very few shops and was something of a disappointment. Next stop was Radcliffe Square, where the Radcliffe Camera was used as a location in the film The Golden Compass – Michael didn’t recognise much of it, but we took photos and videos anyway.

We then went straight to our main attraction of the day, Christ Church College. Michael somehow managed to get us all in for £16, and then everyone was quite excited to be walking up the Hogwarts stone staircase. The Great Hall was a highlight of the visit for Callum O’B and several others. It will be interesting to compare the videos and photos from our visit with the relevant scenes from the movie. After walking through the Courtyard we looked around Christ Church Cathedral, the smallest in the UK, and the gift shop, where COB bought a real Harry Potter Horcrux to carry around his neck. We had to take the long route to get out, but it had been an excellent visit.

We got food from the nearby Tesco Express in St Aldate's, then headed on towards the access point for the cycle route at Grandpont Bridge. We found the path on the other side and followed what we thought was the right route, but the signs stopped so we doubled back and followed the Thames path, even though it was not marked as a cycle route at that point. The cycle route soon joined it however, and it turned out once again to be excellent for cycling and so much better than the roads. Donnington Bridge provided useful shelter from a nasty shower that started just as we arrived there, but then we continued in bright sunshine.

The cycle route left the Thames near Kennington, took us through the village of Radley, then brought us to the attractive Thames-side town of Abingdon. We stopped in Abingdon Meadows just before 1pm for lunch by the Thames, and bright sunshine and boating activity on the rriver made it a great lunch spot. Callum O’B seemed to be having some difficulty wearing his Horcrux!

Continuing along the cycle route through Sutton Courtenay we soon found ourselves right next to the huge towers of Didcot Power Station that we had been seeing in the distance ever since leaving Abingdon. We would have liked to look inside but it was protected by an impenetrable security fence so that idea was a non-starter.

We followed the path onwards through Southmead Industrial Estate and got to Didcot Parkway station at 2.35. We locked up the bikes and then used our final hour to look around the Didcot Railway Centre, which cost us £4 each. This proved to be really interesting, as we could go inside all the many steam locomotives on the site and get a real feel for what it might be like to drive them. There were Broad Gauge engines at the far end, and we got to see a signal box at close quarters.

We just managed to get back to the main station platform in time for John and Will to catch their 3.53 train to Reading, then the rest of us caught the 4.16 train. We arrived just in time to see John and Will board their train back to Devon, then we had refreshments at Reading station and bought more items to enjoy on the train. Our 5.32 train left on time, but I think everyone was tired as it was a very quiet journey home – COB slept for most of the journey (maybe the burden of carrying the Horcrux was just too much for him), and Ash played a Lord of the Rings campaign on the laptop. We arrived at Newton Abbot on time at 7.42pm as planned.

This had been a brand-new touring area for us with many interesting places to see and some great scenery and cycle routes. We could easily go again and see a whole new range of places. The one wet day was not great, but on the whole we had some great weather and a great adventure that we will never forget.

10:15 - 13:00
Morning ride: South Brent
Sunny & warm
12 miles (▲ 314m)
5 Participants: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, George Rogers, John Rogers, Will Rogers
On a fabulous sunny morning we rode fast up Dean Hill, watching some people flying radio-controlled helicopters around the Buckfastleigh horse-racing track. We continued down the hill to South Brent where we bought pastries and doughnuts from the Co-op and ate them in the Play Park.

Michael had planned to go on to Avonwick and maybe even Diptford, but it was 12.00 when we left the park so we returned home along the main road to the Edeswell viaduct. The owners of Edeswell Farm house under the viaduct must be very fond of poultry as the field beside the river was absolutely full of geese and chickens.

We continued via Rattery and down Pennywell hill, arriving home by 1pm. There were some interesting games of Modern Warfare 3 after the ride until 2.30.

10:15 - 13:20
Morning ride: Broadhempston
Sunny start, then showers
11 miles (▲ 273m)
7 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Jack Parnell, George Rogers, John Rogers, Will Rogers
It was good to see Lawrence and Jack on the ride again today. While Lawrence was eating his usual toast and marmalade he revealed his middle name was Michael – an excellent name by any standards.

The forecast was for a mixture of sunshine and showers, but it was sunny all the way up Green Lane to Broadhempston where we played in the park. Michael was only planning to stay there ten minutes before moving on, but when John went to check out the village shop and returned fifteen minutes later with two takeaway coffees it was clear that we wouldn’t be leaving any time soon. So Michael enjoyed his first ever cappuccino while taking some photos of the youngsters playing happily on the park equipment. Then Ash wanted to check out the shop too, so we all went in there and finally left at 12.00 after a very enjoyable 45-minute break.

Michael’s original plans of skirting around to the back of Landscove for a café stop were now dropped in favour of the shorted route past Ron Greet’s tractor yard. When we got to the start of Beaston track there were some dark clouds looming ahead so we made the sensible decision to skip the track and head for home. We only got halfway up the hill to Memory Cross when the heavens opened, so we took shelter in an old barn.

To keep the ride fresh we detoured via Landscove on the way home, but we got a few more showers along the way and were a bit damp when we finally arrived back at 1.20. Everyone did really well on the ride, especially Lawrence. There were the usual games of Modern Warfare 3 after the ride until 2.45.
Sunday 6 May 2012
10:15 - 13:25
Morning ride: Holne
Sunny
7 Participants: Lawrence Buttress, Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Jack Parnell, George Rogers, John Rogers, Will Rogers
George arrived early this morning so he could play on the trampoline, then Lawrence joined in so we didn’t get away until 10.35. We headed for Venford at Jack’s suggestion, but Will and George were slower than usual up Hawson hill, probably because Will had done a long ride with John yesterday to Princetown and Dartmeet. It was 11.50 when we finally arrived at Holne Park so we gave up on Venford and Michael offered either park or café (with no hot food). Well the youngsters wanted both, so they got both.

We had much fun with Ash’s tennis ball, Michael’s Frisbee and the swings. George also went on the big tyre swing at the far end of the park, pushed by Michael. Unfortunately as we were leaving, Lawrence scooped up some water in the Frisbee and aimed it in Will’s Direction. This was apparently in response to Will splashing Lawrence and some other people earlier in the park, but it still took some time to resolve the ensuing disagreement.

We enjoyed drinks and cakes in the café. Ash’s cake seemed half the size of everyone else’s cake so he asked the volunteer serving behind the counter and she kindly agreed to upgrade him.

Will went home with John but George came with the rest of us through Hembury Woods. Today he rode the easier downhill track with Michael, meeting Lawrence at the bottom of the Slalom track so we could all do the final section together. After also riding the section on the other side of the road we got home for around 1.25. Jack and Ash played Halo while the rest of us played Modern Warfare 3.

19:00 - 21:28
Evening ride: Skerraton Down
Sunny, 13°
7 Participants: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, Jack Parnell, George Rogers, John Rogers, Will Rogers
It was a superb sunny evening, but as we rode up the hill past Nurston the sun was always just behind the hill. We felt sure we’d catch it on Skerraton Down, but we got there just as the sun set behind the horizon. At least it gave us a good sunset photo.

It was a bit chilly up on the moor but everyone seemed to enjoy the ride, including Will and George, although perhaps John was not quite so enthusiastic about all the off-road riding. It was dark at 9.15 as we reached the road at Cross Furzes, so in fact we did need the lights that Michael said we wouldn’t need. We got home for 9.28 after the long and chilly descent of Wallaford Road, and finished the evening with hot drinks and some games of Modern Warfare 3 on the PCs.
Sunday 13 May 2012
10:15 - 13:20
Morning ride: Diptford
Sunny, 16°
15 miles (▲ 368m)
5 Participants: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, Jack Parnell, George Rogers
Will and John were recovering from a 50-mile Dartmoor ride yesterday but George still joined us and rode really well today.

We rode up Dean hill and through South Brent without stopping. We then rode along the Cobbly Walk track in Avonwick and crossed the main road to the Diptford road. We stopped beside the river Avon at a spot Michael knew, but the river was too high to have very much fun on the rocks.

Further along the road we stopped at a disused bridge for a chocolate stop: it was a real sun trap so we didn’t really want to leave.

We continued on up the hill to Diptford village then returned via the viaduct and Rattery, admiring the many alpacas that resided in the fields on the left past the viaduct. We got home for 1.20 and played on Modern Warfare 2 and the trampoline until 2.30.
Sunday 20 May 2012
10:15 - 12:15
Morning ride: Chuley Cross and Olympic Flame
Dry
5 Participants: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, John Rogers, Will Rogers
Ash was still recovering from a virus he picked up on Friday. He was really suffering by the time we got to Ashburton, but after a rest he decided to continue. Chuley Hill drained him again so from the top we headed back to Five Lanes.

Michael had planned to go via Green Lane but Ash and Callum really wanted to ride the rough track down to Dart Bridge. Michael advised against it but allowed John to make the final decision as he really doesn’t like off-road much. After some deliberation he decided to give it a go, but this did turn out to be a mistake as it was really muddy: Ash and Callum thoroughly enjoyed it but the rest of us just coped as well as we could.

We returned home via Austin’s Bridge for 12.15, played some games and then set out by car at 1.50 for our very special trip to Totnes. We parked on Barrack’s Hill at 2.03 and walked down to the Totnes bypass just as the advance runners were passing through. Next came the Coca Cola advance party, then Lloyds and finally the Olympic Torch itself with its runners and coaches. It made a great sight and was well worth the effort of a trip to Totnes. We got home for 2.37.
Friday 25 May 2012
19:00 - 21:40
Evening ride: Hembury Woods
Dry
6 Participants: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, George Rogers, John Rogers, Will Rogers
We rode to Hembury Woods and then John and Will went up the main hill while the rest of us took the lower track along the Holy Brook. Callum climbed the usual tree halfway along, then we met the others at Humphreys Cross.

We continued to River Dart Country Park, walking down to the lake for some fun in the semi-darkness, then returned along the old Ashburton road, getting back for around 9.40.
Sunday 27 May 2012
10:15 - 14:15
Morning ride: Totnes
Cloudy but dry
4 Participants: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Callum O'Brien, Will Rogers
George changed his mind about coming at the last minute, so John had to stay home with him too. There had been some rain earlier in the morning at 6.30 and it was forecast to be cloudy until lunchtime, which it was. We considered a few routes but it didn’t take long for everyone to settle on Totnes for a café stop.

We rode out via Colston Road and the Dartington Cycle Path at a very good speed with everyone on top form. The youngsters all climbed into a tree along the riverside path to pose for a photo. The only shower of the day arrived at the most opportune moment – just as we were arriving at Morrisons, our chosen café stop.

After some excellent value food and some unusually friendly banter between Callum and Will we set off around 12.30 and returned via Littlehempston and Totnes by the remarkable time of 2.15, which shows that everyone was on good form. There was a games social until 4.15 that involved Modern Warfare 2 and Ghost Recon.
Sunday 17 June 2012
10:15 - 12:10
Morning ride: Holne
Sunny periods
3 Participants: Ash Freeman, Michael Jones, Adam Wyeth
We welcomed Adam back to the club today, out for the first time in nearly a year. He was on his father’s mountain bike as he had written his own bike off in a crash. He made himself very useful by pulling Michael’s handlebars back to virtually their original shape after Friday’s unfortunate incident in the woods.

The forecast was for sunny periods this morning but some showers during the afternoon. Adam preferred a short ride and liked the idea of Holne, so we rode out via Buckfast, Scoriton and Michelcombe at a very good speed.

We took a few tree-climbing photos at Galant Le Bower and then proceeded to Hembury Fort. From there Adam didn’t like the idea of the slalom track so Michael took him by road while Ash rode the track. We got home for 12.10 or so and played several games of MW3 until 3.30.
